The Charlie and Barbara Holland
Where They Raced
Exhibit
Presented by New England Racing Fuel, Inc.
Vermont
A total of 53 race tracks have operated in Vermont, including just one for drag racing and none for road racing. Ken Squier quips that no decent drag strip could be built in Vermont because there were too many mountains to have room for one. There were more different hill climbs in Vermont than any other New England state.
Tracks in operation in 2022 include Thunder Road, dirt tracks Bear Ridge and Devil’s Bowl, Essex Junction Fairgrounds, the Burke Mountain Hill Climb in Lyndonville, and the Mt. Equinox Hill Climb.
Each year there’s a gathering of cars and drivers for a reunion at the otherwise closed Northeastern Speedway. The track is in good enough shape for old cars to be driven around it during vintage days.
