Rhode Island was the site of the first oval track race in the United States, held in Cranston in 1896. Cars drag raced on the Charlestown airport runways. The popular Lonsdale track featured grandstands all the way around its 1/3-mile paved oval where fans saw midgets, cut-downs and stock cars.
